Harbor of Joy is new. This is our first season. We are starting with one town, one Christmas, and a simple promise: no red tape — just show up and take care of people. Every family also takes home a printed guide to local churches, free holiday events, food pantries, utility and housing help, and work training — support that lasts past December.

Why Benton Harbor

Two out of three children here live in poverty.

Benton Harbor, in Berrien County on Lake Michigan's eastern shore, is a city of about 9,000 people where the numbers tell a hard story. For most families here, a real Christmas — the meal, the gifts, the warm coats — is not something the budget stretches to cover.

Benton Harbor's population is 8,953, and 81.5% of residents are Black or African American. The city's poverty rate — 40.1% — is roughly three times the national figure, and its child poverty rate is higher still. One in three households is headed by a single parent.

Serving 500 families means reaching roughly one in seven households in the entire city. This is not a token effort. It is a city-scale Christmas — and it is sized to the need, not to what's easy.

What a family receives

One full package. Nothing partial.

Every one of the 500 families receives the same complete package — a real Christmas, not a token of one.

Gifts for the kids

$968

For an average family — 3.5 children — a variety of fun gifts, everyday necessities, and an educational item, plus a $100 gift card so parents can choose something themselves. Christmas morning should look like Christmas morning.

In every box

A printed guide in every package: local churches, free holiday events, food pantries, utility and housing assistance, and work-training programs — help that lasts past December.

$1,958 per family $217 meal + $91 tree + $968 gifts + $682 winter clothing — the same full package for all 500 families.

The goal

$1,050,000 — and exactly where it goes.

Ninety-three cents of every dollar in the goal lands in a family's hands as food, a tree, gifts, and winter clothing. About seven cents runs a three-day, city-scale distribution honestly and safely — storage, transport, insurance, printing, and processing — with a small cushion against price changes.

Distribution weekend

Families pick up their full Christmas at partner sites across Benton Harbor — three days, one city.

Powered by our neighbors

Young hands, doing the giving.

Harbor of Joy runs on volunteers — and many of them will be students. We're bringing in volunteers from the high schools around Benton Harbor and from Michigan's universities to pack boxes, sort winter clothing, load trucks, and staff the distribution tables. It's help we genuinely need, and it's also the point: a young person who spends a December weekend making sure another family's kids have a tree, gifts, and warm coats carries that spirit of community and giving into everything they do next.

High school volunteers

Students from Benton Harbor's neighboring high schools — teachers, coaches, and service clubs are welcome to bring a group. Shifts run through staging week and the December 18–20 distribution weekend.

University volunteers

Students from Michigan's universities — home for break or serving through a campus organization — can take on team-lead roles: family check-in, loading, and delivery runs across the city.

Schools, clubs, and campus groups: use the form below and tell us about your group in the message field — we'll build a shift around your students.

The GoFundMe campaign, ready to launch

Our public campaign — “Harbor of Joy: Christmas for 500 Benton Harbor Families” — carries the full $1,050,000 goal so every donor, from $25 to $25,000, gives into the same Christmas. The campaign goes live under the organizer's own GoFundMe account; the live link will be posted here the day it launches.

Harbor of Joy: Christmas for 500 Benton Harbor Families
Campaign story — copy-ready
Benton Harbor, Michigan is a city of about 9,000 people where 40% of residents — and two out of three children — live in poverty. The median household income is $31,117. For most families here, a real Christmas isn't in the budget. This December, Harbor of Joy is changing that for 500 families — one in seven households in the entire city. Every family receives the same full package: • A complete holiday meal — turkey or ham and all the sides ($217) • A Christmas tree with lights and ornaments ($91) • Gifts for the children — an average family has 3.5 kids — fun gifts, necessities, and an educational item, plus a $100 gift card ($968) • New winter coats, hats, gloves, and boots for the children ($682) • A printed guide to local churches, free holiday events, food pantries, utility and housing help, and work training That's $1,958 per family. Our goal is $1,050,000, which covers all 500 packages plus the cost of staging and delivering them December 18–20, 2026, through Benton Harbor churches, schools, and community groups. 93% of the goal goes directly to family packages. The work is powered by our neighbors: student volunteers from the high schools around Benton Harbor and from Michigan's universities will pack, sort, and deliver alongside us — young people learning what it means to take care of their own community. $2,100 gives one family its full Christmas. $91 puts a tree in a family's living room. Any amount moves a family off the waiting list and onto the distribution table. Harbor of Joy is a new organization; our 501(c)(3) application is in preparation — if approved, the IRS generally makes exemption retroactive to our formation date (October 19, 2026). Thank you for giving Benton Harbor's kids a Christmas morning that looks like Christmas morning.
